The Benefits of Graded Readers
If you participate in the English Reader Marathon with a positive attitude, you will …
These benefits will not appear after reading one or two graded readers. You must read many to make progress (that's why we call it Marathon!). But remember, every journey begins with the first step. Gambatte! Getting Started Please follow these steps: 1) Choose a graded reader from the Tsurumi University Library graded reader shelf – 2nd floor, 'Tadoku Corner.' 2) To start, choose an easy level – Starter (red label), or 1 (gray label). 3) Choose one that looks fun or interesting to you. 4) If you start reading and don’t like it, or it seems too hard, take it back and get a different one. 5) Don’t stop to look up words in the dictionary; just keep reading. Later, if you want to look up some words, go back and find them and look them up. 6) Read the whole book as quickly as you are able. Some people can read an easy graded reader in one sitting, while others need a few days. If it takes longer than a week to read an easy graded reader, please try to read more pages in one sitting or find an easier book. FAQ
Q1: If I read a lot of graded readers, will my TOEIC score go up? A1: Most likely, yes. Your TOEIC score can improve with 3 months of continuous reading. This is because you achieve automatization in your reading. When you encounter the same words many times, they become part of your word bank automatically. Also, when you read a sentence that is illustrated, the meaning of the sentence is easily understood and you don't feel the need to translate the sentence in your mind. If you start reading graded readers from an easy level, your reading speed will increase, and you will be able to complete a book in a short time. Little by little, you can read slightly higher level books, but your reading speed will continue to improve. Being able to read sentences faster, and knowing more vocabulary, will help you improve your listening as well. Q2: Honestly, I don't really like reading English and I give up soon. What can I do? A1: There are 3 things that will help you continue to read without giving up too quickly. 1) Choose a book that is the right level for you. If it's too difficult with many unknown words, you are more likely to give up. Start with something easy and work up. 2) Choose a book that is interesting to you. Extensive reading is about reading for enjoyment, not reading because someone forces you to. 3) Set achievable reading goals for yourself. Q3: Is it really possible to improve by reading for fun? A1: Absolutely. If you force yourself to read something boring or that you have no interest in, you will not be able to read a lot. Too many difficult words will slow you down and may cause you to quit. Nothing good can happen if you quit, so you must read a lot.
Not updated yet! Try the video!
